ʿImrān al-Burjumī, who said: A slave-boy of his had fled, so he swore that, should he get hold of him, he would cut off his hand. When he did capture him, he sent me to ʿImrān to ask. ʿImrān said, “Tell him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would urge charity in his sermon and forbid mutilation; let him expiate his oath and pardon his slave.”
He added, “Then he sent me to Samura, who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to enjoin charity in his sermon and prohibit mutilation. Let him atone for his oath and overlook the fault of his slave.’ ”
A critic remarked: “The scholars of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections have deliberately left out many reports in which al-Hasan says ‘from so-and-so,’ even though it is proven that he met the person in question, because al-Hasan is known for tadlīs—he suppresses the intermediary and sometimes does so on behalf of weak narrators. This leaves a degree of doubt. Thus, although we have confirmed his hearing from Samura, it remains possible that he did not hear most of the material now circulating as Samura’s—Allah knows best.”
