Abu Nuʿaym, in al-Ḥilya (1), reports—through Muhammad b. ʿAbd al-Rahman b. al-Faḍl, Muhammad b. ʿAbd Allah b. Saʿid, Ahmad b. Ziyad, ʿIṣmah b. Sulayman al-Khazzaz (2), and Fudayl b. Jaʿfar—who said:
“Al-Hasan had just left the audience of Ibn Hubayra. At the door he found a group of qurraʾ and said, ‘Why are you sitting here? Do you wish to enter upon these vile people? By Allah, keeping their company is nothing like the gatherings of the righteous. Disperse—may Allah scatter your souls and bodies! You have already set down (3) your sandals, hitched up your garments, and clipped your hair. You have disgraced the reciters—may Allah disgrace you! By Allah, had you shown indifference to what they possess, they would have desired what you possess; but because you coveted what is with them, they have grown indifferent to you. May Allah cast far away whomever He wills to cast far away.’
Al-Hasan also said, “Son of Adam! The knife is being sharpened, the ram is being fattened, and the oven is being stoked” (4).
Ibn al-Mubarak transmitted: Talhah b. Ṣubayḥ narrated from al-Hasan that he said,
“The believer is the one who knows that whatever Allah has said is exactly as He said it. The believer is the finest of people in deed and the most fearful in heart; were he to spend a mountain-full of wealth, he would still not feel secure until he meets the outcome. Every increase in righteousness and piety only increases his apprehension. The hypocrite, on the other hand, says, ‘The masses are many; I will surely be forgiven; nothing bad will happen to me.’ So he persists in evil deeds while indulging in wishful thinking about Allah” (5).
Al-Tayālisi, in the Musnad version we have heard (6), relates—through Jisr Abū Jaʿfar, from al-Hasan, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever recites Sūrah Yā Sīn at night seeking the Face of Allah will be forgiven.”
