So he stepped down from the pulpit, went into his house, and on that day did not lead the Friday prayer.
Muslim: Abū ʿAqīl narrated to us; al-Ḥasan narrated to us, who said:
“ʿUthmān came out and began to address the people…,” and he related part of Abū Mūsā’s report.
Sulaym ibn Akhdar, from Ibn ʿAwn: al-Ḥasan informed us, saying:
“One day ʿUthmān was preaching when a man stood up and said, ‘We ask you by the Book of Allah…,’ and he went on to recount something similar.”
They pelted him with stones, and then those who had pelted him were themselves stoned; after that—by Allah—the people began stoning one another. The elder was finally brought down, supported between two men; he could scarcely hold his head up before he was taken into the house, and he said, “If you were to bring the Mother of the Believers, perhaps they would leave him alone.”
He continued: “So they brought Umm Ḥabībah bint Abī Sufyān. I saw her on a white mule inside a howdah (1). When they reached the house with her, they turned the mule around and led her back.”
Ḥurayth ibn al-Sāʾib: al-Ḥasan narrated to us, saying:
“During the caliphate of ʿUthmān I used to enter the apartments of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him; I could touch their ceilings with my hand, and I was a pubescent youth at the time (2).”
Ḍamrah, from Ibn Shawdhub, said:
“Al-Ḥasan said: ‘On the day ʿUthmān was killed I was fourteen years old.’”
Al-Ḥasan then said, “Were it not for forgetfulness, knowledge would have been abundant.”
Ḥammād ibn Zayd, from Ayyūb, from al-Ḥasan, said:
“I visited ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ.”
Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim: al-Ḥasan related to us; ʿAmr ibn Taghlib related to us, traced back to the Prophet: “You will fight a people who wear sandals made of hair (3).”
ʿAbd al-Ḥāfiẓ ibn Badrān and Yūsuf ibn Aḥmad informed us, saying:
