the hems of seventy men who had fought at Badr.
He (Ibn al-Madīnī) replied, “This is false. I have counted the Badri Companions from whom any narration is reported, and they do not reach fifty; of these, twenty-four are from the Emigrants.”
Shuʿayb ibn al-Ḥabḥāb narrates from him: “I saw ʿUthmān while water was being poured over him from a ewer.” (1)
Yahyā al-Qaṭṭān said, “His ḥadiths from Samurah—we have heard that they come from a written compilation.” (2)
I say: It is authentically established that he actually heard Samurah in the ḥadith about the ʿaqīqah (3) and in the ḥadith prohibiting mutilation. (4)
Qatādah remarked, “Al-Ḥasan never spoke face-to-face with any Badri regarding a ḥadith.” (5)
Yahyā al-Qaṭṭān, speaking about al-Ḥasan’s narrations from Samurah, said, “We have heard that they are from the book of Maʿn al-Qazzāz.” (2)
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to us: I heard al-Ḥasan say, “I heard Abū Hurayrah say, ‘Wuḍūʾ is required after anything altered by fire.’” Al-Ḥasan then said, “I will never abandon that ruling.” (6)

(3) The ʿaqiqa hadith is reported by Ahmad, 5/7, 17, 22; Abu Dawud (2838); al-Nasai, 7/166; and al-Tirmidhi (1522), through al-Hasan from Samurah: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “A male infant is in pledge for his ʿaqiqa; it is slaughtered for him on the seventh day, he is named, and his head is shaved.” The chain (isnad) is sound, for al-Bukhari, 9/512, transmits it via ʿAbd Allah b. Abi al-Aswad → Quraysh b. Anas → Habib b. al-Shahid, who said: Ibn Sirin told me to ask al-Hasan from whom he had heard the ʿaqiqa report; he answered, “From Samurah b. Jundub.”
(4) The hadith forbidding mutilation (al-muthla) is recorded by Abu Dawud (2667) on the authority of Muʿadh b. Hisham → his father → Qatadah → al-Hasan → al-Hiyaj b. ʿImran. ʿImran had a runaway slave and vowed that, if he recaptured him, he would cut off the slave’s hand. He sent me to enquire, so I went to Samurah b. Jundub, who said: “The Prophet ﷺ used to urge us to give charity and forbid mutilation.”

(6) Ibn Saʿd, vol. 7, p. 158. A sound narration from Jabir states: “The last of the two commands of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was to abandon ablution after eating food altered by fire.” Reported by Abu Dawud (192) and al-Nasai, 1/108, with an authentic chain.
