Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Among those who narrated from him were: Ayub, Shayban al-Nahwi (the grammarian), Yunus ibn Ubayd, Ibn Awn, Humayd al-Tawil, Thabit al-Bunani, Malik ibn Dinar, Hisham ibn Hassan, Jarir ibn Hazim, al-Rabiʿ ibn Sabih, Yazid ibn Ibrahim al-Tustari, Mubarak ibn Fadala, Aban ibn Yazid al-ʿAttar, Qurrah ibn Khalid, Hazm al-Qataʿi, Salam ibn Miskin, Shumayt ibn ʿAjlan, Salih Abu ʿAmir al-Khazzaz, ʿAbbad ibn Rashid, Abu Hariz ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Husayn, the judge of Sijistan, Muʿawiyah ibn ʿAbd al-Karim al-Dall (1), Wasil Abu Harrah al-Raqashi, Hisham ibn Ziyad, Shabib ibn Shaybah, Ashʿath ibn Biraz, Ashʿath ibn Jabir al-Huddani, Ashʿath ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Humrani, Ashʿath ibn Sawwar, Abu al-Ashhab, and a host of others.

He also reported in mursal form from a number of Companions—such as ʿAli and Umm Salamah—although he never heard directly from either of them, nor from Abu Musa, nor from Ibn Sariʿ, nor from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, nor from ʿAmr ibn Taghlib, nor from ʿImran, nor from Abu Barzah, nor from Usamah ibn Zayd, nor from Ibn ʿAbbas, nor from ʿUqbah ibn ʿAmir, nor from Abu Thaʿlabah, nor from Abu Bakrah, nor from Abu Hurayrah, nor from Jabir, nor from Abu Saʿid.

This was stated by Yahya ibn Maʿin.

Al-Bukhari said: “No direct hearing of al-Hasan from Daghfal is known.”

Others added: “He likewise did not hear from Salamah ibn al-Muhabbik (2), nor from al-ʿAbbas, nor from Ubayy.”

Yaʿqub ibn Shaybah said: “I asked Ibn al-Madini, ‘It is claimed regarding al-Hasan: I have taken…’”

(1) Al-Samʿani notes in al-Ansab that the epithet “al-Dall” (the one who went astray) has nothing to do with religious error; the man received it because he lost his way on the road to Mecca. He was actually counted among the intelligent, pious and trustworthy figures of Basra. (2) According to Abu Muhammad al-ʿAskari in Kitab al-Tashif, the word is pronounced al-muḥbiq—i.e., with a kasra on the letter b—whereas many hadith transmitters misread it with a fatḥa. See al-Taj, s.v. ḥ-b-q.
