Muḥammad ibn Muslim al-Ṭāʾifī, on the authority of ʿAmr, reported that Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr used to perform the pilgrimage on foot while his riding-animal was led beside him.
Yaʿlā ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us from ʿUthmān ibn Ḥakīm, from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr, who said, “Never in my life have I raised my voice in Mecca, nor have I ever leased out any land of mine; if someone wished to cultivate it, I simply lent it to him.” He added, “He would complete every rite of the pilgrimage on his own two feet.”⦗1⦘
Ibn Abī Dhīʾb transmitted from al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbbās, from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr, that some people once said to him, “They say you behave as though you are afflicted with tīh—that is, arrogance.” He answered, “By Allah, I have ridden a donkey, worn a single wrap, and milked a goat, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Whoever does such things harbors not a trace of pride.’” This is a sound mursal report.⦗2⦘
Al-Wāqidī, his scribe,⦗3⦘ Khalīfah, and al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār stated: “Nāfiʿ died during the caliphate of Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik. Sulaymān assumed office in 96 AH and died in 99.” Al-Wāqidī also related—from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-Zinād—that Nāfiʿ passed away in 99 AH. I (the author) say: In my estimation he died sometime in the nineties.
