He was declared reliable by al-ʿIjli, Abū Zurʿah, and several others.
ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī said, “Zayd’s students—those who took knowledge from him and issued legal verdicts based on his rulings—were twelve men in total, some of whom met him and some of whom did not. Among them was Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr.” (1)
Ibn Ḥibbān wrote, “He was one of the finest of people; he used to perform the pilgrimage on foot while his she-camel was led beside him, and he would dye (his beard) with wasmah (a plant-based indigo dye).” (2)
Ibn al-Mubārak remarked, “Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr was counted among the eloquent speakers of Quraysh—together with ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik.” (3)
It is related from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr that he said, “Whoever attends a funeral merely so that the family may see him should not attend it at all.” (4)
It is also said that Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr once visited al-Ḥajjāj. Al-Ḥajjāj declared, “I have killed Ibn al-Zubayr, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣafwān, and Ibn Muṭīʿ, and I wish I had killed Ibn ʿUmar as well.” Nāfiʿ replied, “What Allah has willed for you is better than what you wished for yourself.” Al-Ḥajjāj said, “You have spoken the truth.”
When Nāfiʿ came out, ʿAnbasah ibn Saʿīd said to him, “Staying with this man will bring you no good.” He answered, “I came out for jihād.” He then took leave of al-Ḥajjāj and set off toward Daylam. (5)
Mālik ibn Yazīd ibn Rūmān said, “I used to pray next to Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr, and he would nudge me so that I might prompt him with the verse while we were in prayer.”
