Harīz ibn ʿUthmān narrated from Khalid ibn Maʿdān, who said:
“When any one of you finds that a door of goodness has been opened to him, let him hurry to enter, for he does not know when it may be closed again.” (1)
He also said: “The eye is an asset and the self is an asset. The best wealth a servant possesses is that from which he benefits and puts to use; the worst of your possessions is that which neither you see nor sees you—its reckoning is on you while its benefit goes to someone else.” (2)
ʿAṭiyyah ibn Baqiyyah related, on the authority of his father, from Bahīr ibn Saʿd: “I heard Khalid ibn Maʿdān say: ‘Whoever seeks people’s praise by contradicting the truth, Allah will turn that praise back upon him as blame; and whoever bears people’s blame in order to uphold the truth, Allah will turn that blame into praise for him.’” (3)
Yazīd ibn Hārūn said, “Khalid ibn Maʿdān died while fasting.” (4)
Ibrāhīm ibn Jaʿfar al-Ashʿarī narrated from Salamah ibn Shabīb, who said: “Khalid ibn Maʿdān used to glorify Allah forty thousand times each day, in addition to his recitation of the Qur’an. When he died and was laid upon the bier to be washed, he began to move his finger like this—meaning that he was still counting the glorifications.” (5)

Al-Haytham, al-Madāʾinī, Ibn Maʿīn, al-Fallās, and a number of others said, “Khalid ibn Maʿdān died in the year 103 AH.”
Ibn Saʿd (6) stated, “They are unanimous that he died in the year 103 AH.”
