—to be that very man.
And if a herald were to announce, “Only one man among you will enter the Fire,” it would behoove every person to fear lest he be that one (1).
I read before Ishaq ibn Tariq; Ibn Khalil informed you; Ahmad ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Abu ʿAli narrated to us; Abu Nuʿaym narrated to us; Ahmad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Maʿbad narrated to us; Yahya ibn Mutarrif narrated to us; Muslim ibn Ibrahim narrated to us; ʿUbayd al-Rahman ibn Fadala—the brother of Mubarak—narrated to us; Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated from Anas:
A woman entered upon ʿAʾishah with two of her children. ʿAʾishah gave her three dates. The mother handed each child a date, and they ate their dates. Then they looked toward their mother, so she took the remaining date, split it in two, and gave half to this child and half to that one.
The Prophet ﷺ entered, and ʿAʾishah told him what had happened. He said, “Why does that amaze you? Allah has shown her mercy because of the mercy she showed her two children (2).”
This is a singular (gharīb) report.
It was narrated solely by ʿUbayd al-Rahman, who is truthful though sparing in narration. Ibn al-Mubarak and Ibn Mahdi transmitted from him, and he has no ḥadith in the Six Books.
Abu Nuʿaym the ḥāfiẓ said: The only one to transmit it from him was Muslim ibn Ibrahim.
