Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Salim ibn Nuh said: Al-Jurayri informed us, on the authority of Abu Nadrah, who said:

Talhah ibn ʿUbayd Allah came out to us wearing two garments dyed with safflower (1).

Ibn Hibban states in Al-Thiqat: “He was among those who make mistakes, yet he was one of the most eloquent of people; toward the end of his life he was stricken with paralysis.”

He died in 108 AH—or, some say, 107 AH—and he requested that al-Hasan lead the funeral prayer for him, which al-Hasan did during the governorship of ʿUmar ibn Hubayrah over Iraq.

I (the author) say: Al-Bukhari cited him only for corroboration and did not transmit any of his hadith directly.

ʿUqayli and Ibn ʿAdī both included him in their respective works, yet neither recorded anything that points to weakness in him. Indeed, Ibn ʿAdī merely noted that he served as the ʿarīf (spokesman) for his clan.

I also say: He is one of those better known by their kunyah. A version of his hadith with a higher chain of transmission has reached me:

Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Salam al-ʿAsruni told us; ʿAbd al-Muʿizz ibn Muhammad al-Bazzar told us; Tamim ibn Abi Saʿid told us; Abu Saʿid al-Kanjarudhi told us; Abu ʿAmr al-Hayri told us; Abu Yaʿla al-Mawsili told us; Shayban narrated to us; Abu al-Ashhab narrated to us; Abu Nadrah informed us, from Abu Saʿid (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

“While we were on a journey with the Prophet ﷺ, a man came riding his mount, lashing it to the right and to the left. The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Whoever has extra space on his mount should share it with one who has no mount, and whoever has surplus provisions should share them with one who has no provisions….’ He went on listing other kinds of wealth until we were convinced that none of us had any right to keep a single surplus item.”

Through this same chain, Abu Nadrah also reported from Abu Saʿid:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ noticed some of his Companions lagging behind and said to them, ‘Move forward and follow my lead, and let those who come after you follow yours, so that …’”
