and those who pluck the eyebrows, and those who file their teeth to create gaps for beauty, thereby altering Allah’s creation?”
He answered, “And why should I not curse those whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed, when it is in the Book of Allah?”
She said, “By Allah, I have read everything that lies between the two covers of the Muṣḥaf, yet I have not found it. (1)
Abū ʿUbayd al-Ājurī said: Abū Dāwūd narrated to us; they related to us from al-Ashjaʿī, from Sufyān, from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, who said:
“They used to think that much of Abū Hurayrah’s hadith was abrogated.”
I say: In reality, a great many of his reports were abrogating, for he accepted Islam on the nights of the conquest of Khaybar. Compared with the knowledge he carried from the Prophet ﷺ, the proportion of abrogating and abrogated material is but a small fraction. He was among the foremost imams of ijtihād (independent juristic reasoning) and of those qualified to issue fatwās—may Allah have mercy on him. Sound Sunnah texts are not rejected on the strength of mere assertions.
Abū Dāwūd said: Ibn Abī al-Sarī narrated to us; Yūnus ibn Bukayr related to us, from al-Aʿmash, who said:
“I never saw anyone quicker to set aside a hadith he had not personally heard than Ibrāhīm.”
It was said that when Ibrāhīm was on his deathbed he fell into intense anxiety. Someone spoke to him about this, and he said:
“What peril could be greater than the one I am in? I am expecting a messenger to arrive from my Lord, bearing either Paradise or the Fire. By Allah, I would wish that it remained choking in my throat until the Day of Resurrection. (2)"
