—being the seventh of seven, or the ninth of nine.
al-Shaʿbī then asked, “Have you buried your companion?”
I replied, “Yes.”
He said, “He has left behind no one more knowledgeable than he, nor anyone more versed in jurisprudence.”
I asked, “Not even al-Ḥasan or Ibn Sīrīn?”
He answered, “Not even them—nor anyone from Basra, nor anyone from Kufa, nor anyone from the Hijaz.”
In another version he added, “nor anyone from Syria.” (1)
al-Tirmidhī (2) transmitted—through the route of Shuʿbah, from al-Aʿmash—who said:
I said to Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī, “Give me a report with an isnād from Ibn Masʿūd.”
He replied, “Whenever I say to you, ‘So-and-so narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd,’ that is exactly what I heard; but when I simply say, ‘ʿAbd Allāh said,’ then it comes to me through more than one transmitter from ʿAbd Allāh.”
There are two opinions concerning Ibrāhīm’s age: one that he lived forty-nine years, the other that he lived fifty-eight years.
He died in the year 96 AH.
Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad, ʿAbd al-Walī ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh, ʿĪsā ibn Barakah and a group of others told us:
ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar informed us; Saʿīd ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Bannāʾ related to us in person in the year 549 AH; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Zaynabī informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn Zunbūr narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṣāʿid reported to us; Yūsuf ibn Mūsā related to us; Jarīr narrated to us, from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, who said:
ʿAbd Allāh said: “May Allah curse the women who tattoo and those who ask to be tattooed, the ones who pluck the eyebrows, and those who create gaps between their teeth for beauty, thereby altering Allah’s creation.”
A woman of Banū Asad named Umm Yaʿqūb, who regularly recited the Quran, heard of this. She came to him and said, “What is this report that has reached me—that you have cursed the women who tattoo and those who seek tattoos …”
