Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Jarīr narrated, on the authority of Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, that:
“Al-Shaʿbī, Ibrāhīm, and Abū al-Ḍuḥā used to sit together in the mosque reviewing hadith. Whenever a matter arose for which they had no transmitted report, they would all turn their eyes toward Ibrāhīm.” (1)

Yahyā ibn Maʿīn said, “The mursal reports of Ibrāhīm are dearer to me than the mursal reports of al-Shaʿbī.” This was related by ʿAbbās from him.

Ibn ʿAwn said: “I described Ibrāhīm to Ibn Sīrīn, and he remarked, ‘Perhaps he is that one-eyed youth who used to sit with us in ʿAlqamah’s circle; he would be among the people as though he were not among them at all.’” (2)

Shuʿbah narrated, from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, who said, “I have never written a single word.” (3)

Mughīrah said, “We held Ibrāhīm in awe the way one reveres a governor.” (4)

Ṭalḥah ibn Muṣarrif said, “In Kūfah nothing impresses me more than Ibrāhīm and Khaythamah.” (5)

Fuḍayl al-Fuqaymī related that Ibrāhīm told him, “No one writes a book without coming to rely on it.” (5)

Abū Qaṭan said: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash: “I said to Ibrāhīm, ‘When you report something from ʿAbd Allāh, supply the chain.’ He replied, ‘When I say, “ʿAbd Allāh said,” it means I heard it from more than one of the Companions; but when I say, “So-and-so narrated to me,” then it was indeed that person who narrated it to me.’” (6)

Mughīrah also said, “Ibrāhīm disliked leaning against a pillar.” (7)
