—among them al-Bara’, Abū Juḥayfah, and ʿAmr ibn Ḥurayth.
He once entered upon the Mother of the Believers ʿĀʾishah while still a boy, and he did not remain long enough to hear anything directly from her. Even though a report of his from her is cited in the collections of Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, and al-Qazwīnī, the specialists regard that chain as broken. All of them, however, still list Ibrāhīm among the Successors, though not among the most senior of them.
He was thoroughly acquainted with the legacy of Ibn Masʿūd, vast in transmission, innately gifted in jurisprudence, of great stature and many virtues—may Allah Most High have mercy on him.
Those who narrated from him include: al-Ḥakam ibn ʿUtaybah, ʿAmr ibn Murrah, Ḥammād ibn Abī Sulaymān—his disciple—, Simāk ibn Ḥarb, Mughīrah ibn Miqsam—his disciple—, Abū Maʿshar ibn Ziyād ibn Kulayb, Abū Ḥuṣayn ʿUthmān ibn ʿĀṣim, Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir, ʿUbaydah ibn Muʿattib, Ibrāhīm ibn Muhājir, al-Ḥārith al-ʿUklī, Sulaymān al-Aʿmash, Ibn ʿAwn, Shibāk al-Ḍabbī, Shuʿayb ibn al-Ḥabḥāb, ʿUbaydah ibn Muʿattib (1), ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-Shaʿthāʾ al-Muḥāribī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shubrumah, ʿAlī ibn Mudrik, Fuḍayl ibn ʿAmr al-Fuqaymī, Hishām ibn ʿĀʾiḍ al-Asadī, Wāṣil ibn Ḥayyān al-Aḥdab, Zubayd al-Yāmī, Muḥammad ibn Khālid al-Ḍabbī, Muḥammad ibn Sūqah, Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, Abū Ḥamzah al-Aʿwar Maymūn, and many others besides.
Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿIjlī said: “He never transmitted from any of the Companions of the Prophet—Allah bless him and grant him peace—though he met a number of them and saw ʿĀʾishah.”
He and al-Shaʿbī were the muftis of the people of Kūfah in their time. He was a righteous, learned, and scrupulous man, unpretentious, and living in concealment from al-Ḥajjāj.
Abū Usāmah related from al-Aʿmash that he said: “Ibrāhīm was a money-changer of ḥadīth (2),” i.e., an expert who could distinguish the genuine from the spurious.
