Yazīd ibn al-Aṣamm. He then said, “Shall we go and sit with him? His maternal aunt is Maymūnah.”
So we sat with him (1).
Our shaykh says in his Tahdhīb: It is reported that he actually saw the Prophet ﷺ.
One of Yazīd ibn al-Aṣamm’s sons stated that he died in 101 AH (2). Abū ʿUbayd and Abū ʿArūbah al-Ḥarrānī, however, said that he died in 103 AH. Al-Wāqidī related—from Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Aṣamm—that Yazīd ibn al-Aṣamm passed away in 103 AH at the age of seventy-three.
Jaʿfar ibn Burqān narrated from Yazīd ibn al-Aṣamm, from Maymūnah, who said: “Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrated, he would spread his arms so wide that the whiteness of his armpits was visible” (3).
- Yazīd ibn al-Hakam ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ al-Thaqafī, of Basra
One of the eloquent poets. He transmitted hadith from his uncle, ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ. Among those who narrated from him were Muʿāwiyah ibn Qurrah and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq. He was part of a delegation to the Umayyad caliph Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik, who rewarded him with a substantial sum of money, and he had been appointed governor of Fārs.
Among his poetry:
“I bartered youth and ignorance for forbearance and piety;
I returned to my reason, and the forbearing one always returns.”
