His marriage—peace and blessings be upon him—to ʿĀʾishah and Sawdah, the two Mothers of the Believers:
Hishām ibn ʿUrwah narrated from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “The Messenger of Allah—God bless him and grant him peace—married me after Khadījah had passed away, before the Hijrah, when I was six years old, and he consummated the marriage with me when I was nine. Some women came to me while I was playing on a swing, my hair hanging loosely, and they prepared and adorned me, then brought me to him.” ʿUrwah added: “She remained with him for nine years.” This is an authentic hadith.
Abū Usāmah related from Hishām, from his father: “Khadījah died three years before the Prophet—God bless him and grant him peace—left for Madinah. He then remained single for two years, or thereabouts, and married ʿĀʾishah when she was six, and consummated the marriage when she was nine.” Al-Bukhārī recorded it in this mursal form.
Hishām ibn ʿUrwah also narrated through his father, from ʿĀʾishah, that the Messenger of Allah—God bless him and grant him peace—said: “I saw you in a dream twice. A man was carrying you in a piece of silk and said, ‘This is your wife.’ I uncovered it and saw you and said, ‘If this is from Allah, He will bring it to pass.’” Agreed upon.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs narrated from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, from Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥāṭib, who said: ʿĀʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her—said: “When Khadījah died, Khawlah bint Ḥakīm came to the Messenger of Allah—God bless him and grant him peace—and said, ‘Will you not marry?’”
