Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Ghilan ibn Jarir said, “Whenever Muslim ibn Yasar entered the prayer, he was like a motionless garment lying on the ground.” (1)

Ibn Shawdhab reported that when Muslim ibn Yasar began his prayer he would say to his family, “Speak as you wish, for I cannot hear your conversation.” (2)

He also related that a fire once broke out in Muslim’s house and was extinguished. When the matter was later mentioned to him, he said, “I never even realized it.” (3) This report was transmitted by Saʿid ibn ʿAmir al-Ḍubaʿi from Maʿdi ibn Sulayman.

Hisham ibn ʿAmmar and others narrated—through Ayyub ibn Suwayd, al-Sari ibn Yahya, and Abu ʿAwanah, from Muʿawiyah ibn Qurrah—who said:

“Muslim ibn Yasar used to perform Hajj every single year, taking with him a number of his brethren who had grown accustomed to accompanying him. One year he was delayed until the days of Hajj had passed. He then said to his companions, ‘Set out.’

‘How?’ they asked.

He replied, ‘You must go.’ So, out of respect for him, they set off. When night fell, a violent whirlwind overtook them so that they could scarcely see one another. At dawn they found themselves facing the mountains of Tihamah. They praised Allah, and he said, ‘Why are you amazed at this, given Allah’s power?’” (4)

Qatadah reported that Muslim ibn Yasar, while speaking about qadar (divine decree), said: “There are two deep valleys into which people venture, never reaching their end. Therefore, work as a man who knows that nothing will save him but his deeds, yet rely upon Allah as a man who knows that nothing will befall him except what Allah has written for him.” (5)
