189 – Rāshid ibn Saʿd al-Hibrānī * (4)
He was also known as al-Maqraʿī (1), a jurist and the leading traditionist of Ḥimṣ.
He related ḥadith from: Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān, Thawbān, ʿUtbah ibn ʿAbd al-Sulamī, Abū Umāmah, Anas, and a number of others.
Among those who transmitted from him are: Thawr ibn Yazīd, Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd al-Zubaydī, Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān, Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr, Abū Bakr ibn Abī Maryam, Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ, and the scholars of Ḥimṣ.
More than one authority declared him reliable, including Ibn Maʿīn, Abū Ḥātim, and Ibn Saʿd.
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “There is nothing wrong with him.”
Ibn Ḥazm, however, said on his own, “He is weak”—a judgment that is rejected.
Al-Dāraquṭnī said, “There is nothing wrong with him; his reports may be considered.”
It is also reported that he narrated from ʿAwf ibn Mālik al-Ashjaʿī and that he was present at the Battle of Ṣiffīn alongside Muʿāwiyah. If this is sound—and it is possible—then he lived to about ninety years of age.
Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd said, “He is dearer to me than Makḥūl.”
Ibn Saʿd, Khalīfah, and Abū ʿUbayd recorded that he d. 113 AH.
Another report states that he died in 108 AH.
