Ḥātim—whose narrations are deemed passable—reported from Abū Hārūn ʿImārah ibn Juwayn al-ʿAbdī, who is weak and inclined to Shiʿism. The same report was also transmitted in full, with similar wording, from Abū Hārūn by Hushaym and Nūḥ ibn Qays al-Ḥaddānī, and Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd passed it on from both of them. It was likewise conveyed at full length by Salamah ibn al-Faḍl, from Ibn Isḥāq, from Rūḥ ibn al-Qāsim, from Abū Hārūn al-ʿAbdī; by Asad ibn Mūsā from Mubārak ibn Faḍālah; by ʿAbd al-Razzāq from Maʿmar; and by al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah from ʿAmmār ibn Muḥammad—all of them ultimately from Abū Hārūn. Because of a tradition with a chain of this sort, Abū Hārūn came to be regarded as abandoned.
ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, reporting from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, said about the verse, “And We did not make the vision which We showed you…” (Qurʾān 17:60): “It was a vision seen with the physical eye.”
Ibn Abī al-Zinād, from Hishām, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken on the Night Journey in spirit while he lay asleep on his bed.”
Maʿmar, from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken on the Night Journey in spirit while he lay asleep on his bed.”
Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥamzah al-Zubayrī said: Ḥātim ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us: ʿĪsā ibn Māhān related to me, from al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas, from Abū al-ʿĀliyah, from Abū Hurayrah. “H.” Likewise, Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim, Yūnus ibn Bukayr, and Ḥajjāj al-Aʿwar said: Abū Jaʿfar al-Rāzī—that is, ʿĪsā ibn Māhān—told us, from al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas, from Abū al-ʿĀliyah, from Abū Hurayrah or someone else, that the Prophet ﷺ, commenting on the verse “Glory be to Him who transported His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque…” (Qurʾān 17:1), said:
“A mount was brought to me and I rode it; each stride reached as far as its gaze. Gabriel accompanied me. We came upon a people who sowed and reaped in a single day; whenever they harvested, the crop returned as it had been. I asked, ‘O Gabriel, who are these?’ He replied, ‘These are those who emigrated in the path of Allah; each good deed of theirs is multiplied seven hundredfold: ‘Whatever you spend of anything, He will replace it’ (Qurʾān 34:39).’
“Next we passed by people whose heads were being smashed with stones; each time they were crushed, they returned as they had been. I asked, ‘O Gabriel, who are these?’ He said, ‘These are the ones whose heads were too heavy for the prayer.’
“Then we passed by people patched in front and back, roaming like cattle over the bitter thorn, the zaqqūm tree, and the heated stones of Hell. I asked, ‘O Gabriel, who are these?’ He answered, ‘Those who withhold the zakāt.’
“We came to a beam laid across the road; nothing passed it without being torn apart. Concerning them Allah, exalted is He, says: ‘And do not sit in every path, threatening…’ (Qurʾān 7:86).
“Then we encountered a man who had gathered an enormous bundle he could not carry, yet he wanted to add more to it. I asked, ‘O Gabriel, what is this?’ He said, ‘This is a man from your community burdened with a trust he cannot discharge, yet he wishes to increase it.’
“Finally, we reached people whose tongues and lips were being cut with iron shears; whenever they were clipped they returned as they had been. I asked, ‘O Gabriel, who are—”
