Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿIjlī said: “Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh was a Successor and trustworthy.” (1)
Aḥmad and Ibn Rāhwayh declared: “The soundest chains of transmission are al-Zuhrī → Sālim → his father.”
Abbas narrated from Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, who said: “The hadith of Sālim and al-Qāsim are virtually equal in reliability; Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib is likewise close to them, while I prefer the mursal reports of Ibrāhīm to theirs.”
Abbas added: “I asked Yaḥyā, ‘Who is more knowledgeable about Ibn ʿUmar, Sālim or Nāfiʿ?’ He replied, ‘People say that Nāfiʿ did not begin narrating until after Sālim had died.’ (2)
Al-Bukhārī stated: ‘Sālim never heard directly from ʿĀʾishah.’ (3)
Al-Nasāʾī, commenting on the report transmitted by al-Zuhrī from Sālim from his father and traced back to the Prophet—‘On crops watered by rainfall a tithe is due…’ (4)—noted that Nāfiʿ transmitted the same wording from Ibn ʿUmar as Ibn ʿUmar’s own statement, and added:
‘Sālim and Nāfiʿ differ in their narrations from Ibn ʿUmar on three hadith; this is one of them.
The second concerns the saying, “Whoever sells a slave who owns property…” (5). Sālim reports it from his father and traces it back to the Prophet, whereas Nāfiʿ relates it from Ibn ʿUmar as the Companion’s own statement.’
