ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad ibn Zayd; his grand-nephew Khālid ibn Abī Bakr ibn ʿUbayd Allāh; another nephew, al-Qāsim ibn ʿUbayd Allāh; and a host of others besides them.

ʿAlī ibn Zayd narrated from Ibn al-Musayyib, who said:
Ibn ʿUmar once asked me, “Do you know why I named my son Sālim?”
I replied, “No.”
He said, “After Sālim, the freedman of Abū Ḥudhayfah—meaning one of the early pioneers (1).”

Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd related from Ibn al-Musayyib, who said:
“ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar was the child of ʿUmar who most resembled him, and Sālim was the child of ʿAbd Allāh who most resembled him (2).”

Salamah al-Abrash reported from Ibn Isḥāq, who said:
“I saw Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh wearing wool. He was large-framed and sturdy, working with his own hands and earning his livelihood (3).”

Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr said:
“A group of Egyptians came to Medina and stopped at the door of Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh. They heard the groaning of a camel, and while they were standing there a dark-complexioned man emerged, wrapped in a woollen cloak tied around him up to his chest. They asked him, ‘Is your master inside?’
He said, ‘Whom are you looking for?’
They replied, ‘Sālim.’
As he conversed with them, something occurred that altered his appearance.
He asked again, ‘Whom do you seek?’
They said, ‘Sālim.’
He responded, ‘Here I am. What has brought you?’
They said, ‘We have come to question you.’
He said (4), ‘Ask whatever you wish.’
He then sat down, his hand smeared (5) with the blood and pus that had splashed onto him from the camel, and they proceeded to question him (6).

Ashhab reported from Mālik, who said:
“In Sālim’s era there was no one who more closely resembled the righteous of earlier generations in their renunciation of the world, their virtue, and their manner of living than he. He would wear a single garment…"
