Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He was a man of Medina; his kunyas were Abū ʿUmar and Abū ʿAbd Allāh, a Qurashī of the clan of ʿAdiyy, Medinan by residence.

His mother was an umm walad (a slave-concubine who had borne a child).

He was born during the caliphate of ʿUthmān.

Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh narrated to us in the year 692 AH; Abū Rūḥ al-Harawī narrated to us; Tamīm al-Jurjānī narrated to us; Abū Saʿd al-Adīb narrated to us; Abū ʿAmr ibn Ḥamdān narrated to us; Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī narrated to us; Ḥawtharah ibn Ashras related to us; ʿUqbah ibn Abī al-Ṣahbāʾ—about whom I asked Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, and he declared him reliable—reported from Sālim, from his father:

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the dawn prayer, then faced the place where the sun rises and said, “Lo, the trials come from over there”—he repeated it three times—“and from there the horn of Satan will rise.” (1)

Its chain is ḥasan (good) and elevated; we have no report from Sālim with a higher isnād than this.

He narrated from his father—and he did so prolifically and with excellence—

and from ʿĀʾishah, as recorded in Sunan al-Nasāʾī; and from Abū Hurayrah, in both al-Bukhārī and Muslim;

and from Zayd ibn al-Khaṭṭāb al-ʿAdawī and Abū Lubābah ibn ʿAbd al-Mundhir—though those transmissions are mursal;

and from Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj, Safīnah, Abū Rāfiʿ the Prophet’s freedman ﷺ, Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, and his father’s wife Ṣafiyyah.

Transmitters who narrated from him include: his son Abū Bakr; Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd; ʿAmr ibn Dīnār; ʿAmr ibn Dīnār al-Qahramān; Muḥammad ibn Wāsiʿ; Yaḥyā ibn Abī Isḥāq al-Ḥaḍramī; Abū Bakr ibn Ḥazm; al-Zuhrī; Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥarmlah; Kathīr ibn Zayd; Fuḍayl ibn Ghazwān; Ḥanẓalah ibn Abī Sufyān; Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān; Ṣāliḥ ibn Muḥammad ibn Zāʾidah, Abū Wāqid; ʿĀṣim ibn ʿAbd Allāh; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawwād; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar; ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār; his nephew ʿUmar ibn Ḥamzah; and the son of his son—
