Husayn narrated from Mujahid:
“While I was performing the prayer one night, something in the form of a young boy stood up. I rushed toward him to seize him, but he leapt away and landed behind the wall—I even heard the sound of his fall (1). Then he said, ‘They are as afraid of you as you are of them, because of Solomon’s dominion (2).’
It is related from al-Aʿmash that he said, “Mujahid looked as though he were a mere porter, yet when he spoke, pearls issued from his mouth.”

“ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz said to me, ‘Mujahid, what are people saying about me?’ I replied, ‘They say you are bewitched.’ He said, ‘I am not bewitched.’
“He then summoned a servant of his and said, ‘Woe to you! What made you give me poison to drink?’ The servant replied, ‘I was given one thousand dinars and the promise of my freedom.’ ʿUmar said, ‘Bring them here.’ So he brought the money, and ʿUmar cast it into the public treasury and said, ‘Go where no one can see you’ (5).”

Al-Humaydi and others said, “He was the freedman of Qays ibn al-Saib.”
