The same date was recorded by Muṣʿab ibn ʿAbd Allāh, Ibn Maʿīn, al-Fallās, ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Tamīmī, al-Bukhārī, and several others; at that time he was seventy-three years old.
I say: this places his birth near the end of ʿUthmān’s caliphate, in 34 AH.
Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr said, “He passed away in 109 AH.” This is a mistake, most likely due to a scribal slip.
Khalīfah said, “He died in 104 AH.”
Al-Haytham ibn ʿAdī said, “In 100 AH.” This report is irregular, and even more irregular is the narration given by al-Bukhārī ⦗1⦘, from Hārūn ibn Muḥammad, on the authority of an unidentified man:
that he, Ibn al-Musayyab, ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, and Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān all died in what was called “the Year of the Jurists,” the year 94 AH.
Aḥmad ibn Salāmah informed us—by authorisation—from Abū al-Makārim al-Taymī; Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaddād told us; Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; Ibn Khallād narrated to us; al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Usāmah narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAtāʾ narrated to us; Ibn Jurayj narrated to us; Yūnus ibn Yūsuf ⦗2⦘ informed me, on the authority of Sulaymān ibn Yasār, who said:
When the people dispersed from Abū Hurayrah, Nātil—the spokesman of the Syrians—said to him, “O Abū Hurayrah, relate to us a ḥadīth you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
He replied, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
‘The first of mankind to be judged on the Day of Resurrection will be three persons.
-
A man who was martyred will be brought forth. He will be shown the blessings with which Allah favored him, and he will acknowledge them. He will be asked, “What did you do with them?” He will answer, “I fought in Your cause until I was martyred.” He will be told, “You lie; you only fought so that people would say, ‘So-and-so is courageous,’ and they have already said it.” Then he will be ordered to be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire.
-
A man who acquired knowledge and recited the Qur’an will be brought. He will be reminded of Allah’s favors upon him, which he will recognize. He will be asked, “What did you do with them?” He will reply, “I studied knowledge, recited the Qur’an, and taught it for Your sake.” He will be told, “You lie; you only did so that it would be said, ‘So-and-so is a scholar and a reciter,’ and it has already been said.” Then he will be ordered to be dragged on his face into the Fire.

A man upon whom Allah bestowed many kinds of wealth will be brought. He will be shown His blessings…’
