Ibn Saʿd said: Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar informed us, saying, “Usāmah ibn Zayd al-Laythī narrated to me, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather.” Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar also said: “Mūsā ibn Yaʿqūb al-Zumaʿī related to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Umm Salamah. And Mūsā ibn Yaʿqūb narrated to us, from Abū al-Aswad, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah. Isḥāq ibn Ḥāzim likewise narrated to me, from Wahb ibn Kaysān, from Abū Murrah, from Umm Hāniʾ. And ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar narrated to me, from Zakariyyā ibn ʿAmr, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from Ibn ʿAbbās.
Their reports overlap, and they said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken on the Night Journey on the seventeenth night of the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, before the Hijrah, from the ravine of Abū Ṭālib to Jerusalem.” They continued the narration until one of them said: “When he was found to be missing, the Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib dispersed in search of him. Al-ʿAbbās reached Dhū Ṭuway and began calling, ‘O Muhammad! O Muhammad!’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ answered, ‘Here I am.’ Al-ʿAbbās said, ‘My nephew, your people have been searching for you since last night. Where have you been?’ He replied, ‘I have just come from Jerusalem.’ Al-ʿAbbās asked, ‘All in a single night?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He then asked, ‘Has anything but good befallen you?’ The Prophet replied, ‘Only good has come to me.’”
Umm Hāniʾ said: “He was taken on the Night Journey only from our house. He slept with us that night after leading the night prayer. Shortly before dawn we woke him for the morning prayer, and he rose; after performing the dawn prayer he said, ‘O Umm Hāniʾ, I have just been to Jerusalem, prayed there, and then prayed the dawn prayer with you.’ I said, ‘Do not tell the people; they will deny you.’ He replied, ‘By Allah, I will certainly tell them.’ So he informed them, and they were amazed.” She then carried on with the story.
As you can see, al-Wāqidī distinguished between the Night Journey (isrāʾ) and the Ascension (miʿrāj), placing each on a separate date.
