Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Maʿmar narrated from al-Zuhrī, who said:
“I used to go to ʿUrwah and sit at his door for a long while. Had I wished, I could have entered, yet I would return without doing so, out of reverence for him.” (1)

Abū al-Aswad reported on the authority of ʿUrwah, who said:
“I sought the hand of Ibn ʿUmar’s daughter — Sawdah — while we were performing ṭawāf. He gave me no reply at all. Later, when I reached Madinah, I went to him. He said, ‘Did you mention Sawdah?’
‘Yes,’ I answered.
He said, ‘You mentioned her while we were in ṭawāf, and the presence of Allah stood before our very eyes. Do you still desire her?’
‘I am more eager than ever,’ I replied.
He called out, ‘Boy, summon ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh and Nāfiʿ, the freedman of ʿAbd Allāh.’
I asked, ‘And will you call some of the family of al-Zubayr as well?’
He said, ‘No.’
I said, ‘Then the freedman of Khubayb?’
He answered, ‘That is even further removed.’
He then said to the two of them, ‘This is ʿUrwah ibn Abī ʿAbd Allāh. You both know his standing. He has asked me for Sawdah, and I have married her to him in the manner Allah has decreed for Muslim women vis-à-vis Muslim men: that they be kept honorably or released graciously, and on condition that he may lawfully approach her with whatever renders a woman of her rank lawful. Do you accept, ʿUrwah?’
‘Yes,’ I said.
He replied, ‘May Allah bless you.’ (2)

Hishām ibn ʿUrwah said: “Ibn al-Zubayr resided in Mecca for nine years, and ʿUrwah stayed with him.” (3)

Ibn ʿUyaynah said: “When Ibn al-Zubayr was killed, ʿUrwah left for Madinah with the money. It was demanded of him, so he travelled to ʿAbd al-Malik, arriving before the official courier bearing the news. When he reached the palace gate he said to the doorkeeper, ‘Tell the Commander of the Faithful that Abū ʿAbd Allāh is at the door.’
‘Who is Abū ʿAbd Allāh?’ the doorkeeper asked.
He replied, ‘Just tell him so.’
The doorkeeper went in and said, ‘There is a man at the door bearing the marks of travel who says such-and-such.’
Abd al-Malik said, ‘That is ʿUrwah; admit him.’
When he saw him he rose from his seat and began to ask, ‘How is Abū Bakr?’—meaning ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr.
‘He has been killed—may Allah have mercy on him,’ ʿUrwah replied.
Abd al-Malik descended from the throne and prostrated, while al-Ḥajjāj had already written to inform him: ‘ʿUrwah has left…’
