He asked, “The three?”
He replied, “A truthful tongue, a devout heart, and a righteous wife.” (1)
Al-Layth narrates—from Rashīd ibn Kaysān—who said:
“We were on Rhodes (2) while our commander was Junādah ibn Abī Umayyah. Muʿāwiyah wrote to us that winter was approaching, so make your preparations.
Tubayʿ, the son of Kaʿb’s wife, said, ‘You will head home on such-and-such a date.’
They found this hard to believe until his companion said to him, ‘They call you nothing but “the liar.”’
He answered, ‘Permission will reach them on such-and-such a day, and on that very day a wind will come and tear down this small structure.’ (3)
His remark spread, and at daybreak everyone waited for it to happen. A wind came, surrounded the structure (3) and uprooted it; the people shouted, and there appeared a boat at sea carrying news of Muʿāwiyah’s death and the pledge of allegiance to Yazīd, together with permission for the army to return home. The people then spoke highly of Tubayʿ. (4)
Tubayʿ died at a very advanced age in 101 AH, in Alexandria.
Al-Nasāʾī recorded his narrations. I know of no criticism against him, and his hadith are ʿazīz (well-supported).
