Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Abu Nuʿaym narrated: Abu Jaʿfar al-Rāzī related to us, from al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī, who said:

“Speak of Allah’s majesty as much as you wish, yet whatever you mention, He is greater still (1). Speak of the Fire as much as you wish, yet whatever you say of it, it is more intense. And speak of the Garden as much as you wish, yet whatever you describe of it, it is more excellent (2).”

Jābir al-Juʿfī transmitted from Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī who said:

“All the descendants of Fāṭimah have agreed to speak of Abu Bakr and ʿUmar in the finest possible terms (3).”

I say: Umm Farwah, daughter of al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad ibn Abu Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, was Abu Jaʿfar al-Bāqir’s wife and the mother of his son Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq.

Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah ibn Muṣarrif narrated from Khalaf ibn Ḥawshab, from Sālim ibn Abī Ḥafṣah—who inclined toward Rafd—who said:

“I visited Abu Jaʿfar while he was sick, and he declared—so it seemed, on my account—: ‘O Allah, I befriend and love Abu Bakr and ʿUmar. O Allah, if there is anything in my heart contrary to this, then let me be deprived of Muḥammad’s intercession on the Day of Resurrection (4).’ ﷺ”

ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus related from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī Sulaymān:

I asked Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī about the verse, “Your ally is only Allah, His Messenger, and those who believe” (al-Māʾidah 5:58). He answered, “It refers to the Prophet’s Companions ﷺ.” I said, “Some claim it refers exclusively to ʿAlī.” He replied, “ʿAlī is one of them (5).”

Shabābah reported to us: Bassām informed us; I heard Abu Jaʿfar say, “Al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn…"
