Thus Mālik ibn Anas cites it: “ʿUmar ibn ʿUthmān.”
Yet ten reliable transmitters disagreed with him; they reported it from Ibn Shihāb, and every one of them said: “from ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān.” The same wording—“ʿAmr”—is what appears in the two Ṣaḥīḥs.
158 – His Son
Abū Jaʿfar al-Bāqir, Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn (ʿ)
He is the noble master and Imam, Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī, a descendant of the Prophet’s Household, Fāṭimid, Medinan, and the son of Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn.
He was born in the year 56 AH, during the lifetimes of ʿĀʾishah and Abū Hurayrah; Aḥmad ibn al-Barqī documented this.
He transmitted—by mursal reports—from his two grandfathers: the Prophet ﷺ and ʿAlī (Allah ennoble his face). He likewise reported mursal narrations from al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn. He also transmitted mursal traditions from Ibn ʿAbbās, Umm Salamah, and ʿĀʾishah. د
He narrated from Ibn ʿUmar, Jābir, Abū Saʿīd, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar, Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, his father Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn, Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah, and many others.
He likewise transmitted—again mursal—from Abū Hurayrah and Samurah ibn Jundab.
He was not a prolific narrator; in this regard he, his father, and his son Jaʿfar are alike—each one’s ḥadiths do not fill a large fascicle—yet they possessed legal discussions and verdicts.
Those who reported from him include: his son, ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, al-Aʿraj (both of whom preceded him in status), ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, Abū Isḥāq al-Sibāʿī, al-Zuhri, Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, Rabīʿah al-Raʾy, Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, Ibn Jurayj, Qurrah ibn Khālid, and Ḥajjāj ibn Arṭāh,
