good deed I will credit tenfold.” Reported by Muslim.
Thābit al-Bunānī and Sharīk ibn Abī Namr also transmitted this narration from Anas, but their chains stop with him; they did not link it to Abū Dharr or to Mālik ibn Ṣaʿṣaʿah. That is acceptable, for a Companion’s mursal report is deemed authoritative.
Hammād ibn Salamah related—through Thābit—from Anas that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The Burāq was brought to me; it is a white mount. I rode it until we reached Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). There I tethered it to the ring by which the prophets tie their mounts, then I entered and prayed. Two vessels were brought to me, one of wine and the other of milk. I chose the milk, and it was said to me, ‘You have chosen the natural disposition.’
“Gabriel then took me up to the lowest heaven and asked that it be opened.
‘Who are you?’ they asked.
He said, ‘Gabriel.’
‘And who is with you?’
‘Muḥammad.’
‘Has he been sent for?’
‘Yes, he has.’
The gate was opened for us, and there stood Adam.
“In the course of the narration it states: I then met Joseph—he had been granted half of all beauty—who welcomed me and prayed for my welfare. When the seventh heaven was opened for me I found Abraham, peace be upon him, reclining against the Oft-Frequented House; he welcomed me and prayed for my welfare. Every day seventy thousand angels enter that House and never return to it again.
“I was then taken to the Sidrat al-Muntahā; its leaves were like elephant ears and its fruit like great water-jars. When it was shrouded in what Allah willed of His command, it was transformed in a way no creature can describe for its beauty. Then He drew near and descended and revealed to His servant whatever He revealed, prescribing for me fifty prayers each day.
“I came back down until I reached Moses. He asked, ‘What has your Lord enjoined upon your community?’ I replied, ‘Fifty prayers each day and night.’ He said, ‘Return to your Lord and ask Him to lighten it, for your community will not be able to bear that. I have tested the Children of Israel, tried them, and know them well.’”
