until he returned to his place in high spirits and said, “Excellent!”
ʿĪsā and those seated with him burst into laughter at the man’s exuberance. (1)
145 – Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah*—nicknamed “as-Sajjād” for his devotion and frequent prostration.
He was born during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ and was slain as a young man on the Day of the Camel (2). His father persisted with him until he marched out by his side. His mother was Ḥamnah bint Jahsh, and his son Ibrāhīm will be mentioned later.
146 – Isḥāq ibn Ṭalḥah*
He narrated from his father and from ʿĀʾishah. Narrations from him were transmitted by his son Muʿāwiyah and by his nephew Isḥāq ibn Yaḥyā.
(1) The opening verse is by Bashshar ibn Burd; it is found in his Diwan, 1/186, in a qasida addressed to Sa‘da bint Saqr. Abu l-Faraj al-Isfahani quotes it in Kitab al-Aghani, 3/171, with the variant reading “law ‘uzziyta.” The anecdote together with the two verses also appears in Ibn ‘Asakir, Tarikh Dimashq, 14/8 b–9, whose wording agrees with the Diwan.

(2) Mus‘ab’s Nasab Quraysh, p. 281, relates: “On the day of the Battle of the Camel, Talha ordered him to advance with the standard. He stepped forward, removed his coat of mail and placed it between his feet. Whenever someone attacked him he would say, ‘I adjure you by Ha-Mim,’ and the man would turn back, until Jarir of the Asad b. Khuzayma tribe charged. Muhammad adjured him by Ha-Mim, but Jarir would not desist.
Concerning this the Asadi poet said:
A dishevelled man, standing by his Lord’s verses, harmless to all eyes, a Muslim in truth.
With my spear I fastened his tunic to him, he fell, lifeless in hand and mouth.
For nothing—save that he refused to follow ‘Ali; who shuns the truth commits injustice.
He invoked Ha-Mim while the lances were locked; why not recite Ha-Mim before he advanced?
‘Ali passed his corpse among the slain and remarked, ‘By the Lord of the Ka‘ba—a devoted worshipper! A dutiful son has killed him.’
