and righteous Prophet.

Gabriel then ascended with me until we reached the second heaven. He sought entry and it was said, “Who is this?” He answered, “Gabriel.” They asked, “And who is with you?” He replied, “Muḥammad.” They said, “Has he been summoned?” He replied, “Yes.” They said, “Welcome to him; what an excellent arrival!” The gate was opened, and when I had entered I saw John and Jesus—cousins on their mothers’ side. Gabriel said, “This is John and Jesus; greet them.” I greeted them, and they returned my greeting, saying, “Welcome, noble brother and righteous Prophet.”

He then took me up to the third heaven and sought entry. It was said, “Who is this?” He answered, “Gabriel.” They asked, “And who is with you?” He replied, “Muḥammad.” They said, “Has he been summoned?” He answered, “Yes.” They said, “Welcome to him; what an excellent arrival!” The gate was opened, and when I had entered I found Joseph there. Gabriel said, “This is Joseph; greet him.” I greeted him, and he returned my greeting, saying, “Welcome, noble brother and righteous Prophet.”

He next ascended with me to the fourth heaven and sought entry. It was said, “Who is this?” He answered, “Gabriel.” They asked, “And who is with you?” He replied, “Muḥammad, blessings and peace be upon him.” They said, “Has he been summoned?” He said, “Yes.” They said, “Welcome to him; what an excellent arrival!” The gate was opened, and when I had entered I saw Idrīs. Gabriel said, “This is Idrīs; greet him.” I greeted him, and he returned my greeting, saying, “Welcome, noble brother and righteous Prophet.”

He then ascended with me to the fifth heaven and sought entry. It was said, “Who is this?” He answered, “Gabriel.” They asked, “And who is with you?” He replied, “Muḥammad.” They said, “Has he been summoned?” He said, “Yes.” They said, “Welcome to him; what an excellent arrival!” The gate was opened, and when I had entered I found Aaron there. Gabriel said, “This is Aaron; greet him.” I greeted him, and he returned my greeting, saying, “Welcome, noble brother and righteous Prophet.”

After that he took me up to the sixth heaven and sought entry. It was said, “Who is this?” He answered, “Gabriel.” They asked, “And who is with you?” He replied, “Muḥammad.” They said, “Has he been summoned?” He said, “Yes.” They said, “Welcome to him; what an excellent arrival!” The gate was opened, and when I had entered I found Moses—peace be upon him. I greeted him, and he returned my greeting, saying, “Welcome, noble brother and righteous Prophet.” When I passed by him he began to weep, and it was said to him, “What makes you weep?” He replied, “I am weeping because a young man sent after me will bring into Paradise more of his community than I can bring of mine.”

Gabriel then ascended with me to the seventh heaven and sought entry. It was said, “Who is this?” He answered, “Gabriel.” They asked, “And who is with you?” He replied, “Muḥammad.” They said, “Has he been summoned?” He answered, “Yes.” They said, “Welcome to him; what an excellent arrival!” The gate was opened, and when I had entered I found Abraham—peace be upon him. Gabriel said, “This is your father; greet him.” I greeted him, and he returned my greeting, saying, “Welcome, noble son and righteous Prophet.”

I was then raised up to the Lote Tree of the Ultimate Boundary (sidrat al-muntahā). Its berries were like the great clay jars of Ḥajar, and its leaves like the ears of elephants. He said, “This is the Lote Tree of the Ultimate Boundary.” Four rivers were flowing there—two hidden and two visible. I said, “What are these, Gabriel?” He replied, “As for the hidden ones, they are two rivers in…"
