Abu Nuʿaym ⦗1⦘ said: “The same report was transmitted from ʿAbd al-Malik by Zayd ibn Abi Unaysah, Ismaʿil ibn Abi Khalid, al-Thawri, and Ibn ʿUyaynah—and no one besides ʿUbaydah related it as a report traced back to the Prophet.
Using this chain, Abu Nuʿaym ⦗1⦘ also said: Abū ʿAlī Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us; ʿĀṣim ibn ʿAlī narrated to us; al-Masʿūdī narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from Ribʿī, who said:
“A brother of ours died. After draping the cloth over him, I went out to obtain a shroud. When I returned he had uncovered his face and was saying….” He then recounted something similar, in which he said:
“I promised the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he would not depart until I reached him.”
He added, “I could only liken the departure of his soul to a pebble dropped into water that immediately sinks.”
This was mentioned to ʿĀʾishah, and she said, “We used to say that a man from this community would speak after death.”
Hārūn ibn Ḥātim said: “We were told that Ribʿī died in the year 81 AH.”
Khalīfah ⦗3⦘ said: “It was after the battle of al-Jamājim, in the year 82 AH.”
Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī, and others said: “He died during the caliphate of ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.”
Ibn Numayr said: “He died in the year 101 AH.”
Abu ʿUbayd said: “In the year 100 AH.”
Al-Madāʾinī and Ibn Maʿīn said: “In the year 104 AH.”
