Al-Burjūlānī reported: “Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn narrated to us; Bakr ibn Muḥammad the devotee informed us, from al-Ḥārith al-Ghanawī, who said:
‘Ribʿī ibn Ḥirāsh swore that his teeth would never be seen in laughter until he knew where his final destination would be.’
Al-Ḥārith continued: ‘The man who washed him told us that he remained smiling on his bier while we were washing him, right up to the moment we had finished—may Allah have mercy on him.⦗1⦘’
ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī said: “The sons of Ḥirāsh are three: Ribʿī, Rabīʿ, and Masʿūd.”
Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir said: “Word reached al-Ḥajjāj that you had called Ribʿī’s two sons up for military service and that they had refused. He therefore sent for him, and when he arrived he was an old, stooped man. Al-Ḥajjāj asked, ‘What has become of your two sons?’ He replied, ‘They are at home.’ So al-Ḥajjāj provided him with a mount, clothed him, and ordered that he be treated well.⦗2⦘”
Isḥāq al-Ṣaffār told us; Ibn Khalīl told us; Abū al-Makārim al-Labbān told us; Abū ʿAlī told us; Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; Abū Aḥmad al-Ghassānī narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn al-ʿAbbās al-Bajalī narrated to us; Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn Riyāḥ al-Ashjaʿī narrated to us, from my father, from ʿUbayda, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from Ribʿī, who said:
“We were four brothers, and Rabīʿ was the most devoted among us to prayer and to fasting in the noonday heat. When he died, we were gathered around him and had already sent someone to buy a shroud. Suddenly he drew the cloth from his face and said, ‘Peace be upon you.’
The people replied, ‘And upon you be peace, O brother of Jesus! After death?’
He said, ‘Yes. I have just met my Lord after leaving you, and I found a Lord who was not angry. He welcomed me with relief, fragrant basil, and silk brocade. Know that Abū al-Qāsim (the Prophet ﷺ) is waiting to lead the funeral prayer over me, so hasten me.’
He then became like a pebble flung into a basin.
The report reached ʿĀʾisha, and she said, ‘Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “A man from my community will speak after death.”’⦗3⦘”
