Al-Nasāʾī transmitted the second half of the report on the authority of Ibn Shihāb, who said: “Ibn Ḥazm informed me that Ibn ʿAbbās and Abū Ḥabbah …” to the end of the chain, from Yūnus—and our own chain to Yūnus is higher than his.
Al-Bukhārī likewise recorded it through al-Layth from Yūnus, and ʿAqīl corroborated him with the chain that goes back to az-Zuhrī.
Hammām said, “I heard Qatādah narrating from Anas that Mālik ibn Ṣaʿṣaʿah told him that the Prophet of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, related to them the events of the night he was taken on the Night Journey. He said:
‘While I was in the Ḥaṭīm’—and Qatādah sometimes said, ‘in the Ḥijr’—‘lying down, a visitor came to me.’ (At this point Qatādah would say to the person sitting in the middle of the three of us:) ‘He came to me.’ I also heard Qatādah say, ‘Then he split me from here to here.’ I asked Jārūd, who was seated next to me, ‘What does he mean?’ He answered, ‘From the pit of his throat down to the pubic area.’
‘My heart was taken out, then I was brought a golden basin filled with faith; my heart was washed, stuffed, and returned to its place. After that a white mount was brought to me, smaller than a mule yet larger than a donkey.’ Jārūd asked him, ‘Is that the Burāq, Abū Ḥamzah?’ He replied, ‘Yes. It places its hoof at the farthest point it can see.’
‘I mounted it, and Gabriel set off with me until we reached the lowest heaven. He sought entry. It was asked, “Who is this?” He replied, “Gabriel.” They asked, “And who is with you?” He said, “Muḥammad.” They asked, “Has he been sent for?” He said, “Yes.” They said, “Welcome to him; what an excellent arrival!” The gate was opened, and when I had entered I found Adam there. Gabriel said, “This is your father Adam; greet him.” So I greeted him, and he returned my greeting, then said, “Welcome, noble son …”’
