He transmitted from: ʿUmar, Abu Dharr, Abu al-Dardaʾ, and a group of Companions whom he did not actually meet; such reports are therefore mursal (with a missing link).
He also related from Ibn ʿUmar, Jundub ibn ʿAbd Allah, ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar, and several others.
Narrators who reported from him include Tawbah al-ʿAnbari, Qatadah ibn Diʿamah, ʿAsim al-Ahwal, Humayd at-Tawil, Ismaʿil ibn Abi Khalid, and many others.
Ibn Saʿd ⦗1⦘ said: “He was trustworthy, devoted to worship, and he died during the governorship of ʿUmar ibn Hubayrah over Iraq.”
Yusuf ibn ʿAtiyyah: Muʿalla ibn Ziyad narrated to us, saying:
Muwarriq al-ʿIjli said, “Nothing I hear is more pleasing to me than the death of the person I love most among my family.” ⦗2⦘
He also said: “I practiced silence for ten years, and I have never uttered a word in anger that I later regretted once the anger subsided.” ⦗3⦘
Hammad ibn Zayd narrated from Jamil ⦗4⦘ ibn Murrah, who said:
“Muwarriq—may Allah have mercy on him—used to come to us and say, ‘Hold this purse for me; if you need it, spend from it.’ That would be the last time he ever referred to it.”
Jaʿfar ibn Sulayman said: Some of our companions narrated to us:
“Muwarriq would engage in trade and earn wealth, yet not a single week would pass with any of it left in his possession. He would go to a brother, hand him four hundred or five hundred, and say, ‘Keep this for me.’ Later he would meet him and say, ‘It is yours; I have no need for it.’” ⦗5⦘
