Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

—and fifty.

Accordingly, his birth would have fallen during the caliphate of Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib—may Allah be pleased with him.

Yūsuf ibn Aḥmad and ʿAbd al-Ḥāfiẓ ibn Badrān informed us, saying:
Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Qādir reported to us; Saʿīd ibn Aḥmad reported to us; ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Busrī (1) reported to us; Abū Ṭāhir al-Mukhlis narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Abū Naṣr al-Tammār narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muslim, from al-Aʿmash, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, said:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Make yourselves independent of people, even if it is by means of no more than the tiniest splinter of a miswak.” (2)

And with this same chain up to al-Mukhlis, ʿAbd Allāh al-Baghawī narrated to us; Abū al-Rabīʿ al-Zahrānī narrated to us; Yaʿqūb al-Qummī narrated to us; Jaʿfar ibn Abī al-Mughīrah, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, said:

“Ask us, for you will never question us about anything except that we have already asked about it.”

A man asked, “Will there be singing in Paradise?”
He replied, “In it are mounds (3) of musk, upon which stand maidens who praise Allah with voices the ears have never heard the like of.”

Al-Musallam ibn Muḥammad and Ibn Abī ʿUmar wrote to inform us that ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad told them: Hibat Allāh ibn Muḥammad informed us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad informed us; Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Shaddād narrated to us; Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥabīb, from Abū Thābit, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, said:

Allah revealed to Muḥammad ﷺ: “Indeed, I slew for the sake of Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyā seventy thousand souls, and I shall slay for the sake of your grandson seventy thousand and seventy thousand.”

(1) In the manuscript the word is wrongly spelled with the letter ya; we have corrected it on the basis of al-Samani’s Al-Ansab and the author’s Mushtabih al-Nisba. (2) All the transmitters in the chain are reliable. The hadith is likewise recorded by al-Tabarani, al-Bazzar, and al-Bayhaqi, and was judged authentic by al-Hafiz al-Iraqi, al-Haythami, and al-Sakhawi. The expression shaws al-siwak (with either damma or fatha on the first consonant) denotes the rinse water of the siwak or the splinters that come off it. (3) Akam is the plural of akmah, meaning a small hill. The isnad of the hadith is hasan (sound).
