Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Abu Bakr ibn ʿAyyash said: Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad informed me, saying:
“We came to Saʿid and found him in good spirits, his young daughter sitting in his lap. She began to cry. We escorted him to the Bridge Gate, and the guards said to him, ‘Give us a guarantor, for we fear you might drown yourself.’ I was one of those who stood surety for him.

Abu Bakr continued: It reached me that al-Hajjaj said, ‘Bring me a broad-bladed sword.’(1)

Sulayman al-Taymi said: “Al-Shaʿbi considered dissimulation (taqiyyah) permissible, whereas Ibn Jubayr did not. Al-Hajjaj, whenever a man who had risen against him was brought before him, would ask, ‘Have you become a disbeliever by rebelling against me?’ If the man replied, ‘Yes,’ he would set him free.

When he said to Saʿid, ‘Have you disbelieved?’ Saʿid replied, ‘No.’ Al-Hajjaj then said, ‘Choose the manner in which I should kill you.’ He answered, ‘You choose; retribution awaits you.’

Abu Nuʿaym reported: ʿAbd al-Wahid ibn Ayman narrated to us:
I said to Saʿid ibn Jubayr, ‘What will you say to al-Hajjaj?’ He replied, ‘I will not testify against myself to disbelief.’

Ibn Humayd reported: Yaʿqub al-Qummi related to us, from Jaʿfar, from Saʿid ibn Jubayr, who said:
‘In Hell there is a man who will call out for a thousand years, “O Most Compassionate, O Most Beneficent!” Then Allah will say, “O Gabriel, bring My servant out of the Fire.” Gabriel will go to it but find it sealed shut, whereupon he returns and says, “My Lord, ‘Indeed, it is closed in upon them’ [al-Humazah 8].” Allah will say, “O Gabriel, go back, open it, and bring My servant out of the Fire.” He will open it, and the man will emerge like a shadowy wisp; Gabriel will place him on the shore of Paradise until Allah causes hair and flesh to grow back upon him.(2)’

Ibrahim ibn Tahman narrated from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Saʾib, from Saʿid ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbas, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
‘Whenever the Prophet of Allah Solomon stood in his place of prayer, he would see a tree that had sprouted in front of him. He would ask it, “What is your name?” It would reply, “Al-Kharnub.”(3) He would ask, “For what purpose are you?”(4) It would reply, “For the destruction of this house.” So he said…’

The plant called kharub (carob) exists in two varieties: a wild type found in the countryside, with many branches and thorns about one cubit high; it bears hard, unpleasant pods that are eaten only in times of scarcity. The second, Syrian type is large, broad, sweet, and edible. See al-Taj, s.v. “kharab.” (4) Al-Hilya reads: “anbata” (caused to grow).
