Al-Malik ibn Abi Sulayman said:
Khalid ibn ʿAbd Allah heard the clanking of fetters and asked, “What is that sound?” He was told, “It is Saʿid ibn Jubayr, Talq ibn Habib, and their companions circumambulating the House.” He replied, “Stop their tawaf.”
ʿUbayd Allah ibn Musa informed us, reporting from al-Rabiʿ ibn Abi Salih, who said:
“I entered upon Saʿid ibn Jubayr when he had been brought to al-Hajjaj. A man there began to weep, so Saʿid asked, ‘What makes you cry?’ He answered, ‘What has happened to you.’ Saʿid said, ‘Then do not weep; it was in Allah’s knowledge that this would occur.’ He then recited: ‘No calamity befalls you on earth or within yourselves but that it is inscribed in a Book before We bring it into being.’ (1) [al-Hadid 22].
Hammad ibn Zayd—on the authority of Ayyub—reported:
“Saʿid ibn Jubayr was asked about dyeing the hair with wasmah (2). He regarded it as disliked and said, ‘Allah clothes a servant’s face with light, and then he quenches it with blackness.’ (3)
Al-Husayn ibn Humayd ibn al-Rabiʿ narrated to us, saying: Wasil ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿla related to us, from Abu Bakr ibn ʿAyyash, from Abu Husayn, who said:
“I saw Saʿid in Mecca and said to him, ‘That man is coming’—meaning Khalid ibn ʿAbd Allah—‘and I do not feel safe for you from him.’ He replied, ‘By Allah, I have fled so much that I am now ashamed before Allah.’ (4)
I say: His concealment lasted a long time, for the revolt of the Qurʾan-reciters against al-Hajjaj occurred in the year 82 AH, and they did not apprehend Saʿid until 95 AH—the very year in which Allah uprooted al-Hajjaj.
