Ibn Luhayʿa narrated from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Dīnār, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, who said:
“Reverential awe is to fear Allah so intensely that your fear becomes a barrier between you and sin—that is true awe. As for remembrance, it is obedience to Allah; whoever obeys Allah has remembered Him, and whoever disobeys Him is not remembering Him, even if he multiplies his glorifications and recites the Qur’an abundantly (1).
It is reported from Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit that Saʿīd ibn Jubayr said to me, ‘Publishing my knowledge is dearer to me than taking it with me to the grave’ (2).
Hilāl ibn Khabbāb said: I asked Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, ‘What is the sign of a people’s ruin?’ He replied, ‘When their scholars have gone’ (3).
ʿUmar ibn Dharr said: Saʿīd ibn Jubayr wrote to my father, exhorting him to fear Allah, and said, ‘Every day a Muslim remains alive is pure gain…,’ then he enumerated the obligatory duties, the prescribed prayers, and the share of remembrance that Allah grants (4).
Aḥmad related: Muʿtamir told us, from al-Fuḍayl ibn Maysarah, from Abū Ḥarīz, that Saʿīd ibn Jubayr said, ‘Do not extinguish your lamps during the first ten nights’—worship delighted him—and he would say, ‘Wake your servants so that they may take the pre-dawn meal for the fast of the Day of ʿArafah’ (5) (6).
ʿAbbād ibn al-ʿAwwām reported to us from Hilāl ibn Khabbāb: ‘We set out with Saʿīd ibn Jubayr on…’
