He heard ḥadith from his father and from ʿAlī.
Among those who transmitted from him were Ibn Sīrīn, Abū Bishr (1), Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, and others.
He was born during ʿUmar’s caliphate. He was reliable, of high standing, a distinguished Qurʾān reciter, and a scholar.
Shuʿbah said: “He was the most proficient reciter in Basra.”
It is also reported that he used to say, “I am the most fortunate of people: I am the father of forty, the paternal uncle of forty, and the maternal uncle of forty; my uncle is the governor Ziyād, and I was the first child born in Basra.” (2)
He was generous and widely praised; on one occasion he gave a man nine hundred water-buffalo.
Some said that it was his brother who made that gift. (3)
Al-Madāʾinī stated that he died in 96 AH.
