Abū Bakr al-Hudhalī said:
Al-Shuʿbī once said to me, “Shall I relate to you a report that you can commit to memory in a single sitting—provided you can memorize as I did? When I was brought before al-Ḥajjāj, shackled in irons, Yazīd ibn Abī Muslim came out to me and exclaimed, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah…,’ and he went on to recount something to that effect (1).
ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd transmitted to us: Shuʿbah informed us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl and Mujālid, on the authority of al-Shuʿbī, who said: “I was present when ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) whipped Shurāḥah on Thursday and then stoned her on Friday. The people seemed to find this strange—or he perceived that they did—so he declared, ‘I lashed her in accordance with the Book of Allah and stoned her in accordance with the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).’ ”
A number of transmitters narrated this from al-Shuʿbī, and some added that she had confessed to fornication.
Ismāʿīl ibn Mujālid, Khalīfah, and several others said: al-Shuʿbī died in 104 AH.
Ibn Mujālid added: he had reached eighty-two years of age (3).
Al-Wāqidī said: he died in 105 AH at the age of seventy-seven (4).
Both dates were recorded by Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn Numayr.
Al-Fallās said: at the beginning of 106 AH.
Yaḥyā said: 103 AH.
The first opinion is the most widely accepted.
Among his aphorisms: Ibn ʿUyaynah, from Ibn Shubrumah, from al-Shuʿbī, reported that he said, “It is called hawā (whim) only because it drags its followers down” (5).
Abū ʿAwānah, from Mughīrah, from al-Shuʿbī, reported that he said, “ ‘I do not know’ is half of knowledge” (6).
