the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, at the very beginning of his mission, would receive visions in sleep. The first time he actually saw Gabriel was at Ajyād. He had gone out to attend to a need when a voice called to him, “O Muḥammad, O Muḥammad!” He looked to his right and to his left but saw nothing; he looked again and still saw nothing. Then he raised his gaze, and there was Gabriel—one leg crossed over the other—standing in the horizon. He said, “O Muḥammad, I am Gabriel, I am Gabriel,” seeking to calm him. The Prophet fled until he reached the people, looked again and saw nothing, then returned, looked once more and saw him. Concerning this the Almighty says: “By the star when it descends, your companion has neither strayed nor erred” (al-Najm 53:1–2).
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAlqamah narrated through Abū Salamah from Ibn ʿAbbās regarding the verse, “And indeed he saw Him on another descent, by the Lote-Tree of the Utmost Boundary” (al-Najm 53:13–14). He said: “His Lord drew near to him and then descended until He was two bow-lengths away, or even nearer; then He revealed to His servant whatever He revealed.” Ibn ʿAbbās added, “The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did see Him.” Its chain of transmission is sound (ḥasan).
Al-Tāj ʿAbd al-Khāliq reported to us; Ibn Qudāmah reported to us; Abū Zurʿah reported to us; al-Muqaddamī reported to us; al-Qāsim ibn Abī al-Mundhir reported to us; Ibn Salamah reported to us; Ibn Mājah reported to us; Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us, saying: al-Ḥasan ibn Mūsā narrated from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Abū al-Ṣalt, from Abū Hurayrah who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “On the night I was taken up I came upon a people whose bellies were like houses, inside them were serpents that could be seen from the outside. I asked, ‘Who are these, O Gabriel?’ He replied, ‘They are those who devoured usury.’” Aḥmad recorded it in his Musnad through al-Ḥasan and ʿAffān from Ḥammād, adding: “I saw this on the night I was taken up, when we had reached the seventh heaven.” Abū al-Ṣalt is an unknown narrator.
