Mālik ibn Mughawil reported through al-Zubayr ibn ʿAdiyy, from Ṭalḥah ibn Muṣarrif, from Murrah al-Hamdānī, from Ibn Masʿūd who said: “When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was taken up on the Night Journey and reached the Lote-Tree of the Utmost Boundary—he said it is in the sixth heaven—everything that rises from below stops there until it is taken up, and everything that descends from above stops there until it is taken down. Concerning the verse, ‘When the Lote-Tree was covered by that which covered it’ (al-Najm 53:16), he said: it was shrouded by butterflies of gold. Isrāʾīl narrated from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd, from ʿAbd Allah regarding the verse, ‘The heart did not deny what it saw’ (al-Najm 53:11): he said, “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw Gabriel wearing a garment of green brocade that filled the space between heaven and earth.”
ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī Sulaymān narrated from ʿAṭāʾ, from Abū Hurayrah concerning the verse, ‘And indeed he saw him on another descent’ (al-Najm 53:13): he said, “He saw Gabriel.” Recorded by Muslim.
