Al-Nasā’ī, along with several other critics, said: “Abū Idrīs is reliable.”
Khalīfah ibn Khayyāṭ and Ibn Maʿīn stated: “Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī died in the year 80 AH.”
I say: Given that he was born in the year of the Battle of Ḥunayn, his age at death would be seventy-two years—may Allah have mercy on him.
His father was a Companion.
Abū al-Maʿālī Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Abū al-Maḥāsin Muḥammad ibn Hibat Allah al-Dīnawarī narrated to us; my uncle Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz (in 539 AH) narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn al-Farrāʾ narrated to us; Abū Muḥammad Ibn Qudāmah narrated to us; and Hibat Allah ibn Hilāl narrated to us—both of the last two said:
Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿĀṣim ibn al-Ḥasan informed us. (ḥ)
Abū al-Maʿālī also narrated to us; the judge Abū Ṣāliḥ Naṣr ibn ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us. (ḥ)
Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd (in 692 AH), Muḥammad ibn Baṭīkh, ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Aḥmad, and Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us; they said:
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Najm, the preacher, narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Khāliq ibn ʿAbd al-Salām, Sitt al-Ahl bint al-Nāṣiḥ, and Khadījah bint al-Riḍā also narrated to us; they said:
Al-Bahāʾ ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; they said:
Fakhr al-Nisāʾ Shahdah bint Abī Naṣr informed us. (ḥ)
Abū al-Maʿālī the ascetic likewise narrated to us; Abū al-Ḥasan Wāthilah ibn Karraz in Baghdad narrated to us; Abū ʿAlī Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Raḥabī narrated to us; he and Shahdah both said:
Al-Ḥusayn ibn Aḥmad al-Niʿālī narrated to us; they said:
Abū ʿUmar ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl al-Maḥāmilī dictated to us; Aḥmad ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Mālik narrated to us, from Ibn Shihāb, from Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī, from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever performs wuḍūʾ should rinse his nose by sniffing water and blowing it out, and whoever uses stones for istijmār should use an odd number of them.”
