Shuʿbah said, “He did not hear anything directly from ʿUthmān.” (1)
Such was Shuʿbah’s statement, but no one corroborated it.
Abān al-ʿAṭṭār related—from ʿĀṣim ibn Bahdalah—from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—that he said, “I received the recitation from ʿAlī.” (2)
Manṣūr transmitted—from Tamīm ibn Salamah—that Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān served as the mosque’s imam, and on rainy days he would be carried to it. (3)
Hammād ibn Zayd (4) narrated—from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib—that Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said:
“We learned the Qur’an from men who told us that whenever they had mastered ten verses, they would not move on to the next ten until they had understood what those verses contained. Thus we learned both the Qur’an and how to act upon it. After us there will come people who will inherit the Qur’an, drinking it down as one drinks water, yet it will not pass beyond their collarbones.” (5)
ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Abī Jaʿfar al-Farrāʾ reported—from his father—from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī—that he once entered his house to find fine cloths and slaughtered animals there. They explained, “ʿUmar ibn Ḥurayth sent them to you because you taught his son the Qur’an.” He replied, “Send them back; we do not accept payment for the Book of Allah.” (6)
Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī transmitted—from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—who said, “My father taught me the Qur’an, and he was one of the Messenger of Allah’s Companions who had campaigned with him.” (7)
