performed ablution, wiped over his two leather boots (1), and then prayed the Maghrib prayer.
The rider said to him, “I came only to ask you about this act of yours. Have you ever seen anyone else do it?”
He replied, “Yes. I saw someone better than I am—and better than the whole ummah—the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, do exactly this.” (2)
This report is transmitted solely by Isrāʾīl.
It is related from Abū Ḥuṣayn that al-Ḥajjāj appointed ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā as judge, then removed him, and finally flogged him in order to make him revile Abū Turāb—even though Ibn Abī Laylā had fought at Nahrawān alongside ʿAlī.
Shuʿbah ibn al-Ḥajjāj said: “ʿAbdullāh ibn Shaddād ibn al-Hād and Ibn Abī Laylā arrived, and their horse plunged with them into the Euphrates, so they both perished—meaning, they drowned.” (3)
Abū Nuʿaym al-Mulāʾī said: “Ibn Abī Laylā was killed at the Battle of al-Jamājim, i.e., in the year eighty-two.” (4)
Others said: in the year eighty-three.
