“The night I was taken on the Night-Journey, I found myself back in Mecca the next morning, shaken by what had happened and certain that people would brand me a liar.”
He sat apart, grieved, when Abu Jahl passed by. Abu Jahl came and, in mocking tones, said, “Has anything extraordinary happened?”
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “Yes.”
Abu Jahl asked, “What is it?”
He said, “I was carried on a Night-Journey last night.”
“To where?”
“To Bayt al-Maqdis.”
“Then you woke up this morning among us?”
“Yes,” he answered.
Abu Jahl, fearing that the Prophet might later deny the story, did not call him a liar outright. Instead he summoned his clan and said, “If I call your people over here, will you repeat to them what you have just told me?”
The Prophet said, “Yes.”
So Abu Jahl called out, “People of Banu Kaʿb ibn Luʾayy, come here!”
The gatherings broke up and they came and sat around the two of them. Abu Jahl said, “Tell them.”
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I was carried on a Night-Journey last night.”
They asked, “To where?”
“To Bayt al-Maqdis.”
They said, “And you are here among us this morning?”
“Yes,” he replied.
Some turned pale; others put their hands on their heads in astonishment, accusing him—so they alleged—of utter falsehood. Among them were men who had travelled to that land and seen the mosque. They said, “Can you describe the mosque for us?”
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “I started to describe it, but some of its features became confused to me.”
Then the mosque was brought before him and set down just short of the house of ʿAqīl—or ʿIqāl—so he described it while looking at it. They said, “As for the description, by Allah, he has hit the mark!”
(This was also narrated by Huwdha from ʿAwf.)
Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm reported: al-Hārith ibn ʿUbayd told us, Abu ʿImrān narrated from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “While I was sitting one day, Gabriel entered and jabbed me between the shoulders. I rose to a tree that had hollows like the nests of a bird…”
