Al-Thawrī narrated, through Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, that Ibn al-Musayyib left an estate of one hundred dinars.
ʿAbbād ibn Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, however, reported that he left two thousand—perhaps even three thousand.
Ibn al-Musayyib said, “I kept that sum only so that I could safeguard my religion with it.”
He also said, “Whoever is content with Allah, people will find themselves in need of him.” (1)
Dāwūd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿAṭṭār narrated, from Bishr ibn ʿĀṣim, who said:
I once said to Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, “Uncle, will you not come out and eat with your people today?”
He replied, “Allah forbid, my nephew! Shall I give up twenty-five prayers—five full cycles of the obligatory prayers—when I have heard Kaʿb (2) say:”

(2) Kaʿb ibn Matiʿ al-Himyari, kunya Abū Isḥāq, better known as Kaʿb al-Aḥbār (lit. “the learned Kaʿb”), was one of the most erudite Jewish rabbis of his time. Born in Yemen, he lived through the pre-Islamic era and the first decades of Islam. He embraced Islam only in the year 12 AH, during ʿUmar’s caliphate, then moved to Syria, settled in Ḥimṣ, and died there in 32 AH under ʿUthmān.
Al-Muʿallimī writes in al-Anwār al-Kāshifa, p. 99: “Kaʿb has an entry in Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb, yet none of the early critics there explicitly declare him reliable; we only find some Companions praising his learning. Despite this, al-Mizzī marked him with the symbol of the two Shaykhs, even though in the Ṣaḥīḥayn he appears merely in passing and no hadith is actually transmitted from him. In fact, I am unaware of any narration on which the scholars depend that comes from him.”
The material he cited from earlier scriptures is not authoritative for Muslims. Some of the salaf quoted it only when it happened to correspond with Qurʾānic statements, and much of what later books attribute to Kaʿb is unreliable, for fabricators ascribed to him many sayings he never uttered.
Al-Bukhārī reports in his Ṣaḥīḥ (Book of Holding Fast to the Qurʾān and Sunnah, chapter “Do not ask the People of the Scripture about anything,” 13/281–282) that Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān heard Muʿāwiya, while on pilgrimage as caliph, telling a group of Quraysh in Madina: “Kaʿb al-Aḥbār is indeed the most truthful of those who relate from the People of the Scripture, yet even so we occasionally catch him in falsehood.”
Ibn Kathīr comments in his Tafsīr, concerning Kaʿb and Wahb ibn Munabbih: “May Allah pardon them for what they transmitted to this umma of reports from the Children of Israel—oddities, marvels, and curiosities, some true, some false, some distorted, altered, or abrogated. Allah has spared us any need for such material by granting us what is sounder, more beneficial, clearer, and more eloquent. All praise and thanks belong to Him.”
