Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He also said, “Not a single prayer do I perform without beseeching Allah against the Banū Marwān.” (1)

Qutaybah related to us: ʿAṭṭāf ibn Khālid narrated, from Ibn Ḥarmalah, who said, “I never heard Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib revile any of the rulers, save that I once heard him say, ‘May Allah fight so-and-so (2); he was the first to tamper with the ruling of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for the Prophet said: The child is to be ascribed to the marriage bed (3).’”

Salām ibn Miskīn, on the authority of ʿImrān ibn ʿAbd Allah, said: “Ibn al-Musayyib would accept nothing from anyone.”

ʿAṭṭāf, from Ibn Ḥarmalah, reported that Saʿīd said, “Do not say muṣayḥif (a ‘little’ mushaf) or musayjid (a ‘little’ mosque); whatever belongs to Allah is majestic, noble, and beautiful.” (4)

ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ziyād ibn Anʿum narrated to me from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd that he heard Ibn al-Musayyib say, “There is no good in the one who does not wish to amass wealth lawfully, so that he may give its due and with it shield his face from needing other people.” (5)

(1) Al-Hilya, vol. 2, p. 167. (2) He is probably referring to Muawiya, who in the year 44 AH recognized Ziyad ibn Abih as his brother. When Abu Bakra learned that Muawiya had acknowledged him and that Ziyad accepted the claim, he swore never to speak to him again, saying: “This man was born of his mother’s fornication and has disowned his father. By Allah, I do not believe that Sumayya ever even saw Abu Sufyan.” See: al-Istiab, no. 825; al-Isaba, no. 2981; al-Awassim min al-Qawassim, p. 235 ff. (3) Related by al-Bukhari on the authority of Abu Hurayra and Aisha (4/250; 5/54; 12/26, 31), by Muslim (no. 1457), and by others. Ibn Abd al-Barr stated: “It is among the soundest of the Prophet’s traditions, transmitted by more than twenty Companions.” After citing it from Abu Hurayra, al-Tirmidhi added: “It is also narrated by Umar, Uthman, Abd Allah ibn Masud, Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, Abd Allah ibn Amr, Abu Umama, Amr ibn Khariqa, al-Bara, and Zayd ibn Arqam.” Al-Hafiz al-Iraqi further included: Muawiya and Ibn Umar. Abu al-Qasim Ibn Manda, in his Tadhkira, added: Muadh ibn Jabal, Ubada ibn al-Samit, Anas ibn Malik, Ali ibn Abi Talib, al-Husayn ibn Ali, Abd Allah ibn Hudhafa, Saad ibn Abi Waqqas, and Sawda bint Zam‘a. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar later added: Ibn Abbas, Abu Masud al-Badri, Wathila ibn al-Asqa, and Zaynab bint Jahsh. (4) Ibn Saad, vol. 5, p. 137. (5) Al-Hilya, vol. 2, p. 173.
